The last place (and time) I saw water voles in Worcs was 2006 or 2007, along the canal by Tardebigge boat yard. Sandwell Valley had a fairly good population along the river upstream from the visitors centre. I would imagine they were also present in the marshy areas both sides of the Tame...

I beg thousand pardons if wrong but did wonder if it was a bank vole. I've seen them by the broad meadow during work parties and from the west hide. Bank voles are also plump......yes, I know. Size wise, bank vole 9.5-10.5 cms, tail length 3.5-7 cms. water vole 15-22 cms, tail 9-14 cms. brown...

Water voles are quite plump and rounded, with chubby cheeks and the head is round and proportionally large ...........yes, I know. Rats have narrow, pointed features. In water, all of the upper body is above the surface (from memory) and whenever they dive a 'plop' should be heard. They also...

    Cole Valley

When Leo was ranger there, skylarks were still breeding and water voles were on the river. There was also a report of an otter being seen. Spraints were found where the Cole joins the Blythe. There was also several sightings of an otter along the river at Trittiford and at Scribbers Lane, the...

GGS showing mid to late afternoon. Thought it had gone to roost about 3pm, light was fading fast; however, saw it again about 3.50. Stayed till dark hoping something else might show but was too wet and cold. Two common buzzards hunting the far field, close to the shrike. Also seen, male...

GGS active in the far field, early afternoon. 150 plus bramblings and chaffinches on the Likeys. Not often the old year ends and the new one begins with GGS and brambling on the list.

Stayed till late but again no sign of the barn owl. Boardwalk is OK but the Hen Brook was continuing to rise and was only a few centimetres below the footbridge.

Moors..........brief sighting of the bittern by the dead willows. Two green woodpeckers and a greater spot along the west track. Fifty plus redwings and fieldfares in the meadow by the seasonal pool. Good numbers of pochard and shoveler. Cetti's heard and then seen from the Bittern Hide. Two...

GGS was in the next field, going towards the other layby. Showing very well from the roadside. Brambling flock still on the Lickeys. To minimise disturbance no need to go any further than 20 feet in the beech plantation. Keep a reasonable distance from the bramble.

    Cole Valley

Earlier this year when the weather was Arctic, there were several sightings of three little egrets roosting along the Cole at Four Arches bridge and reports of a little egret along the Rea at Hazelwell. A barn owl was also seen at a nearby location. Pochard and goosander turn up at...

Have seen quite a lot birding by bike. A great way to see urban wildlife. Plenty of accessible but underwatched sites in the West Mids.

No but the light wasn't that good. Saw the grebes about 4.10 pm. The three great crests were seen flying in by another observer. This was around 3.30 pm.
