    Bird of prey? Bath, England

My impression of this was pied wagtail before I saw Alexander's brightened version of the image. Having seen that, I am confident this is a pied wagtail.

    Black-throated Diver?

Definitely red-throated: if you zoom in on your first photo you can see the bird still has a red throat patch visible. Also grey head and bill shape.

Canada Goose ID Scotland Carlingwark Loch.

Hi Baldoon! I've also seen this pair a few times and I agree that one always seems to look to have a shorter neck than the other, however the head shape is similar and when seen out of the water they seem similar size in body. I came to the conclusion they were both regular Canada (although I...

    Spotting scope advice

The main spec difference between the 055 and the 190 is the height - the 055 being taller. And yes, this does also mean extra weight. Advantage of the 055 is you're unlikely to need to raise or partially raise the centre column in order to achieve a comfortable viewing position, even if you're...

    Dead birds on Solway Coast

Yeah it's been pretty bad up here this winter. Really sad how many barnacle geese have been killed by it. Personally, I've actually seen less dead geese and swans in the last couple of weeks which had made me hopeful that the peak had passed, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

    Hen Harriers

at this time of year they can turn up at all sorts of wetland and coastal sites. I think there's been some sightings of hen harrier at Ham Wall RSPB recently - maybe a local can confirm though. I'd have thought the WWT reserve at Steart Marshes is a likely spot too in winter. In the breeding...

Been trying out MM4 60 and SDL v2

I too recently got a 2nd hand MM4 60 and am similarly impressed - it's just so easy to take out and about. I have the HDF zoom which seems pretty good although obviously significantly dimmer at the highest mag. Did you notice any appreciable difference optically between the HDF zoom and the SDL?

    Hi from SW Scotland

Hi, I recently relocated to Dumfries and Galloway and have been enjoying doing more birding of late. I've just bought a compact spotting scope having only used binoculars for the past 30-odd years and found the range of opinion, advice and discussion to be found in threads on this forum really...
