    Male sparrowhawk v. woodpecker - who wins?

    joannec is right it is a female but the white markings are not displaced feathers. Many females have white marks on their nape especialy 1st or 2nd year birds, but it lessens as they get older.

    Dead Kestrel? Lothian

    Dead Kestrel Definatly a sparrowhawk. Probably a juvenile bird judging by the white on the back of the head. Juvenile plumages are similare in both sexes and brownish like a female.

    Hi Great photos. It is often hard to seperate juveniles from females from a distance unless of course you can count 6 in one place when mum is feeding them.     Tawny Owl attacking Stock Dove in London

    Tawny owls often take birds especialy urban owls. Up to the size of thrushes is most common but they can manage larger birds. They most often take roosting birds and it is fairly uncommon for Tawnies to be out during the day unless the young are very hungry. keith

    falco subbuteo return dates

    Hi Does any one know of records of Hobby spring return dates. I have 20th of March as the earliest in S.E. England in 1999. Although most records are for mid April does any one know of one before the 20th March in the last 10 years cheers
