Very many thanks! It really doesn't look like any of the illustrations of a stonechat in the Collins Bird Guide (no white under the head and a clear differentiation between the lower and upper halves of the head) which is why we discounted it, but books aren't perfect so I will store that away...
Apologies for the awful photo! I saw this this morning on a common near the Malvern Hills, sized somewhere between a sparrow and a starling (the blackberries give an idea of size). My husband and I have both been through all our bird books and just can't work out what it is.
Very many thanks...
Fascinating stuff, Tib78, thank you!
BuckeyeAZ, I did wonder about it being a juvenile, but could find no photographs, and, of course, Malvern is a long way from the coast, although I suppose it is possible that one strayed up the Severn.
I went to a local pond to check out the new goslings with my camera last week (3 May) and found this duck which I just can't match in my books or on-line identifiers. I go to this pond regularly, but have never seen this bird before. Any help as to what it is would be very much appreciated...
