Common Tern?? N French coast - Sept 17

Oh that's an interesting study - just found it by searching online and was interested to see that only 1.3% have all dark bills which I guess is why it's hard to find a photo that shows both.

Common Tern?? N French coast - Sept 17

Thank you Valery - to me, it's much better (and more interesting) to learn from others who are willing to share their knowledge and experience. Really appreciate your help. Good to know this is a 2cy Common Tern - is it usual for them to have the full cap and dark bill combination? I struggled...

Common Tern?? N French coast - Sept 17

Hi Valery - we're a long way from that, so if you can help me with the ID I would be very grateful....

Common Tern?? N French coast - Sept 17

Thanks leifvester - I tried a couple of AI analysers as well, but I think they can omit some of the smaller details. Let's hope a tern expert can help confirm.

Common Tern?? N French coast - Sept 17

Had this down as a Common Tern when I saw it but the more I look through my photos, and compare with Collins and Europe's Birds, the less confident I am. It certainly looks pretty worn and battered but I'm struggling to find a photo/description that exactly matches this bird's features despite...

Southern Brittany, France - Red-necked Phalarope?

Never seen a Phalarope before, but after digging through books and online, I'm thinking this is probably a Juv-->1W Red-necked, based on needle-like bill, lack of buff on breast and completely black top to the head. I'd be grateful for confirmation or otherwise. Thanks!!

Yellowhammer or Cirl Bunting - Brittany, France

Thanks Alexander and yes the picture was taken a few days ago. I'll have a look at the Ricard GutiƩrrez paper - thanks for the suggestion and link. I love the photos on your Flickr feed, but there are lot to scroll through to find the Cirl Buntings. Is there a quick way to locate them? (label or...

Yellowhammer or Cirl Bunting - Brittany, France

Hi - been looking at these photos for a few days now and researching in books and online. Unfortunately, couldn't see the rump colour as I think that's the definitive ID feature? But none of photos or drawings that I've found of either bird matches the head markings exactly. I'd be grateful for...

Denmark (Funen) - long-distance shot - Buzzard species?

Hi Took this at the new Sybergland nature reserve near Kerterrminde in Denmark. Apologies for quality but a long way off, so very heavily cropped. Posture and shape looks like a Buzzard, but never seen one that colour. The Collins Guide (3rd ed) mentions "extremely pale variants (mainly N...

Diver(?) - Firth of Forth, Scotland

Hi - took a huge number of photos to try to get at least a few that could help with ID of this bird - apologies for the appalling quality - long distance, poor light, heavily cropped (but otherwise unedited), taken through a grubby window that couldn't be opened. Taken 1st May 8.30am near Lower...
