Thanks everyone. That was my thought as well but I always like to have confirmation from the pros.

    Water bird ID, Central NY

I think when I photographed it I thought it was an American coot, upon closer inspection I see it isn't. EDIT: Perhaps this closeup picture will help.

Bird call ID, species confirmation and a salamander (New York))

Thanks for the help. The call was what I was hoping could be ID'ed the most as I don't believe I've ever heard it but I have the species. After comparing this song with the ones on the internet I agree, a scarlet tanager.

Thanks for the help everyone, the sparrow had me pretty stumped, I didn't think it was a song sparrow. I had the sandpiper narrowed down between greater or lesser but couldn't decide which.

    ID help needed, Central NY

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm embarrassed that I didn't figure that out on my own, when I first spotted one my immediate reaction was that it was a bluebird but as I watched them I decided they didn't look quite right; the color and seemly small size I guess. Had bluebirds not been nesting in...

Spotted a small flock of these just minutes ago near my bird feeder with some cedar waxwings. They weren't feeding.
