How do mics work and which is best ?

I've been using the sound approach for migrating birds for some years now and this is what I got out of it: my first tries using a sony pcm-10 were not that bad but not sufficient for difficult species ID. Beeing plagued by road noise and others unwanted sounds, I then used a parabolic mic...

Animal Photography with the Canon SX60HS

Just bought 3 weeks ago the SX60 to replace my old SX40 who died after many years of loyal services. I was truly hesitant to purchase it when reading the not so great reviews from the 'SX50 gang'. Nevertheless, it is a major step-up from my previous canon and I find it perfect for bird ID, would...

    sound recorder

Sorry I didn't saw your technique in switching it on/off. Personnally I just open the blimp, switch off, replace the back end and that's it. I believe this is faster than taking the fur cover off and fiddling around to find the switch through the meshing material.

    sound recorder

the blimb hinders the K6 on/off switch indeed. But for migration purposes, as Pimpelmees asked for, you do it every 6-10 hours, it's ok and takes 10 secs. As the K6's AA battery last 3 times as long as as the two required for the PCM-10, should you forget to switch it off, you won't be left with...

    sound recorder

For the windshield I use a Rycote blimp with integrated Rycote anit-vibration mount, works perfect. For the cable, indeed an XLR to jack 3.5mm with the added function of converting sono to stereo, much better when listening/waiting for hours with the headphone on.

    sound recorder

Hello from Belgium! I've used the Sony PCM-10 for over two years, ideal for recording birds at close range during walks and with some good results during migration. Problem is that it is picking up all the unwanted noise (cars, tractors, etc.) as well due to its lack of directionality. Over a...

    SX40 Super Zoom

To David: I use the same settings than Andy's with a 1/3 exp. correction. Took the pic 2m away zoomed-in and voilĂ ! not a lot of light as it was already 19.30. All pics are made handheld. Same settings on the pic below I just took today

    SX40 Super Zoom

having great fun with my SX40, just perfect for what I need. Birds in flight, ID shots, etc. There is chromatic aberration, the viewfinder is the worst I've ever had but for the rest, it does the job without weighing a ton.

    SX40 Super Zoom

Thanks to all your recommandations & experience, I've bought the SX40 as well and must say I'm pleased with the results it gives me. I used it mostly for bird ID shots and it is just perfect for such. Havnt had the opportunity to use it in good lightning but even so, it delivers! In flight or...

    Hello from Belgium!

Hi everybody! Glad to join you all, avid birdwatcher since I was 8, that's over 40 years ago, travelled around the world, lived in the US for many years and enjoyed birding there like crazy! Now I spend most of my birding time counting the fall migration which was excellent this year and still...
