thanks. looked a lot different than the last one I saw. I've definitely seen meadow buntings near my house (west of tokyo), but not in a coastal region like this. appreciate the help.

    Coastal Japan-black masked small bird

About the size of a bulbul. Prominent black mask. Seen at Shimoda, on the Izu peninsula of Japan, about 100 yards inland from the beach. thoughts? sorry I couldn't get any closer.

common bird, uncommon location -- Japan

I'm pretty sure this is a snow goose, I mean, that's an easy one, right? my confusion comes from the fact that this was taken at Lake Tanukiko in Japan (near Mt Fuji), which my guidebook says is rather outside their typical range. thanks in advance.

    Grayish Bird--Japan

thanks! yes, quite common, and rather unpleasant sounding. appreciate the help. around me the crows are by far the most numerous, followed closely by starlings and sparrows. but in the summer the cuckoos become the most noxious, although I almost never see them, I just hear them (or they...

    Grayish Bird--Japan

charming little crest on this one. Overall gray-brown in color, with light gray spots on the belly. Seen in Sakura trees in the Kanto Plains region of Japan (West of Tokyo). Relatively common, at least around here. I'm no good at this game when it comes to rather non-descript birds such as...

    a few little brown birds--Japan

seen in a farmer's field about an hr west of Tokyo (Kanto plains). Unfortunately, to my eye they look similar to any one of hundreds of little brown birds...other species seen nearby were large-billed crows, japanese wagtails, and coal tits. I'm sure they're nothing special but it's nice to...

wow, that was fast! thanks! now that you've said it, I found that in my guidebook, but several hours of poring over it myself last night and I didn't see it. thanks again.

    Having trouble id'ing this one--Japan

Saw 3 or 4 of these swimming in Lake Kawaguchi, Japan (near Mt Fuji). They were swimming alongside some mallards, eastern spot-billed ducks, and tufted ducks. About the same size as all of the above. Sharp, pointed white bill with a white shield over the face, red eye, black head, grey body...
