    Mallorca 2022

Just to add my best wishes for 2022, and thanks to Mike for all that he does to keep the forum going and encouraging the birding efforts of visitors and residents alike on the beautiful island! I’ll add my hopes to others that things can return to something resembling normal this year and that...

    Mallorca 2021

I've written up some notes from our recent short break with Mike and Jane down in the south east of the island. I had a lovely time out in the field with Mike, which included getting seven ticks for my Mallorca list! Thanks Mike! Stew

    Mallorca 2021

Thanks Martin, this sent me to Google. It seems that it was first detected in Mallorca in 2004, possibly as an escape / introduction. I didn’t realise that there are so many Mantid species! Stew

    Mallorca 2021

Wednesday: After breakfast Mike took me along to the Parc at Mondrago. A beefy peregrine was over the entrance road, and a hoopoe led us along the road as we approached the sea. There were several singing blackcaps (I'd seen very few up to now), serins were buzzing around and there were plenty...

    Mallorca 2021

A pre-breakfast watch from the balcony provided another gannet, a group of c30 lapwing and a few starlings. After breakfast Mrs B took me on a nostalgic trip up to Puerto Pollenca for lunch. There was rain on and off (mostly on!) all day (including some impressive thunder and lightning)...

    Mallorca 2021

A relaxing day spent locally to Portopetro. A pre-breakfast walk provided singing serins, firecrests and the many robins and black redstarts that have taken up residence. Later, from the balcony a couple of calling siskins went over, 5 crossbills dived into the fir trees while booted eagle and...

    Mallorca 2021

Hi Phil, no it’s a small selection of the flock of 176+ golden plovers on the offshore island at Colonia st Jordi. As we were leaving, another large group joined them, so eventually the total would have been much larger! Stew

    Mallorca 2021

After an early morning sea watch from the balcony (steady movement of Balearic shearwaters, and a Mallorca list tick in the shape of a gannet) Mike generously took us north in hope of seeing the slender-billed gull at S’Albufera. It took a while, but with Juanjo’s help we saw it on the beach...

    Mallorca 2021

Mike and I spent the day in a trip round some of his local sites here in the south. Robins, black redstarts and song thrushes were in great abundance. We bumped into Jason at the Cap (we’ll leave him to tell you what he had seen, suffice to say envy levels were fairly high!). A group of seven...

    Mallorca 2021

Fingers crossed! A walk around Portopetro this afternoon produced two late house martins and a smart siskin. Nice to see so many black restarts and hear lots of robins too. Stew

    Norfolk birding

There’s a large hornbeam in the paddock which is heaving with seeds, that is attracting the hawfinches at the moment and is why there are reports from all times of the day. The birds are usually buried in among the seeds, so take a ’scope and grill the tree!
