Actinodura souliei

Identification

21 - 23cm. A relatively short-tailed, rufous Barwing:

  • Black-and-tan barring on wing and tail
  • Silvery ear-coverts and crown
  • Heavy dark brown streaks on underparts and on mantle
  • Griseinucha with black lores and stronger black and ochre streaking on crown

Sexes similar. Juveniles not described yet.

Distribution

Found in south China (Sichuan and Yunnan) and north Vietnam.
Uncommon and scarce. Reported in the Laba He Forest Park.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • A. s. souliei:
  • Oak-rhododendron forests of southern China (southern Sichuan to north-western Yunnan)
  • A. s. griseinucha:
  • Oak-rhododendron forests of north-western Tonkin, Vietnam and central and southeast Yunnan, China

Sometimes placed in the genus Ixops.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests. Found at 1700 - 3300m - in a Zone of broad-leaf forest/thick scrub/bamboo - about 300m below where the forest turns into sub-alpine conifer.

Behaviour

No information about breeding.
Resident species. Some altitudinal movement may occur in harsh winters with heavy snowfall.

Diet

Feeds mainly on invertebrates.
Usually seen in small groups, often joins bird waves.
