Identification

18 cm. Dark brown above, white markings on the wings, unstreaked buff underparts becoming darker on the upper chest and facial disc, large head, yellow eyes, white-edged facial disc, short tail, broad wings.

Distribution

Central America from southern Mexico south to western Panama,

Taxonomy

Sometimes considered conspecific with the Northern Saw-whet Owl.

Habitat

Open mountain forests, in the cloud forest and higher oak woodland.

Behaviour

Nocturnal.

The diet includes rodents, shrews and other small mammals, but it will also feed on birds, bats and insects.

It lays its eggs in a tree hole.
