Identification

With 14cm a large Swiftlet of New Guinea.

  • Shallowly forked tail
  • Dark brown upperparts
  • Uniform rump
  • Sooty-grey underparts
  • Tarsi unfeathered
  • Four toes (unlike Papuan Swiftlet which has three toes)

Distribution

Endemic to New Guinea (Indonesia and Papua New Guinea). Found in the south and southwest of the island.
An uncommon restricted range species.

Taxonomy

Like other Aerodramus Swiftles this species is often placed in Collocalia.
Sometimes linked in a superspecies with Mayr's Swiftlet and Whitehead's Swiftlet.
Monotypic

Habitat

Not precisely known. Mostly collected in highlands.

Behaviour

Nothing known about food, feeding, breeding or behaviour. Extensive further study needed.
Resident, no movements known.
