Halcyon senegaloides

Identification

Length: 22 cm (8¾ in)

  • Geyish-brown crown
  • Black lores
  • Greyish ear-coverts and hindneck
  • Blue upperparts and tail
  • Black wings

Distribution

Africa:
Eastern Africa: found in Somalia, Kenya, Mozambique
Southern Africa: South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Halcyon senegaloides has two subspecies[1]:

  • H. s. senegaloides
  • H. s. ranivorus

Habitat

Wooded streams and mangrove swamps.

Behaviour

Diet

Diet includes insects and crabs, prawns, fish, lizards, hunted from a perch.
