South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
This is a polytypic species consisting of four subspecies[1]:
- A. a. apurensis:
- A. a. cherriei:
- Llanos of eastern Colombia (Meta)
- A. a. tenebrosus:
- Tropical eastern Colombia (Vaupés) and Venezuela (south-western Amazonas)
- A. a. aurifrons:
Habitat
Open disturbed grassland, pastures and flooded plains. Amazon Basin rain forest at 600-850 m.
Behaviour
Diet
They forage on the ground, looking for seeds and insects. These are supplemented by arthropods during the nesting season.
