Identification
13 cm
A smallish streaked seedeater with yellow lores, a narrow white eye-ring and chestnut edging on the mantle and flight feathers.
Similar Species
The very similar Yellow-browed Sparrow has much more yellow on the face, has a different song and is found in different habitats.
Distribution
Found throughout most of South America.

This is a polytypic species, consisting of four subspecies[1]:

- North-eastern Colombia (Guajira Peninsula)
- A. h. xanthornus:
- A. h. tarijensis:
- Eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz and Tarija)
Habitat
Tropical savanna, shrubby pastures and forest fringes, dry fields, scrub, humid chaco.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of seeds, with insects added particularly in the breeding season.
