  • Shiny bright green upperparts
  • Matt black throat and chest bordered with blue-green
  • Bright green flanks
  • Black chest tapers onto belly

  • Tail: dark central feathers; outer tail wine-red tipped black
  • Long black decurved bill

  • Bronze-green upperparts
  • White underparts with black central stripe

Immature: Tips of feathers on the head and wings are grey or buff. The area around the eyes is brown.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Rain forest, second growth forest and gardens; observed at heights between 1100 and 1700 meters.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes nectar and insects.

Breeding

It builds a tiny cup nest from seed down, covered on the outside with lichen. The clutch consists of two white eggs which are incubated by the female for 16 or 17 days; fledging takes another 24 days.
