Identification
18 cm
Upperside is dark blue-grey, underside paler blue-grey. Head including sides and rear is mostly rufous with black front, loral and malar areas and white supraloral, submustacial and throat areas.
Similar species
Rufous-eared Brushfinch should not overlap in range.
Distribution
South America: found in the south-central Andes (Apurímac, Cuzco and Puno) of Peru where endemic.
Taxonomy
Monotypic[1]
Sometimes lumped with Rufous-eared Brush Finch (Atlapetes rufigenis).[2]
Habitat
Polylepis woodland and shrubbery at 2700 - 4100 m asl.
Behaviour
Seeks food close to or on the ground.
Breeding
Birds in breeding condition have been observed in March and juveniles in May. Further information needed.
