Identification

Large, dark slaty wings and body, white head and neck.

Distribution

New Guinea and Australia; vagrant to New Zealand and Tasmania.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Freshwater wetlands and wet grasslands.

Behaviour

The diet includes small terrestrial and aquatic animals. It nests in dead or living trees.
