Identification

35-40 cm

  • Brown back
  • Cap, nape and wing tips are darker
  • Brownish-white undersides
  • Pinkish legs

Distribution

Breeds Balearic Islands; ranges to coastal northern Europe

Habitat

Pelagic. Breeds on islands and coastal cliffs.

Breeding

One egg is laid in a burrow. Nocturnal visits are made to avoid predation.

The diet includes fish and molluscs.
