Identification
15cm.
Male: Blue-grey head, neck, upper chest and flanks. White under chest, abdomen and under-tail coverts. Back bluish grey with blackish lines. Black tail, central rectrices with wide white band. Yellow bill, legs orange.
Female: Head, back, upper tail coverts and upper wing coverts brownish gray with black lines, thinner on head. White throat, front neck, chest and flanks with cinnamon lines, white abdomen. Tail has a white band which is narrower than in the male. Bill horny. Legs orange.
Distribution
South America: found in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.
Taxonomy
This species has in the past been placed in genus Phrygilus.

Habitat
Dry and high-altitude shrubland.
Behaviour
A ground nester. Three or four eggs, which are light olive beige with little spots of violet and black, are laid in an open cup-type nest made of soft grass, lined with fine grass or horse hair.
