Bannerman's Shearwater - BirdForum Opus

Puffinus bannermani

Identification

27-33 cm; relatively short wings and longish, rounded tail
Upperside is sooty black with more bluish-black head and neck, mainly white underside including undertail coverts, but usually relatively large, dark patch on carpal region of underside of wings.

Distribution

Northern Pacific: breeds on Bonin and Volcano islands south of Japan. Non-breeding range not well known but expected to be relatively near those islands.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

This species has in the past been considered part of either Audubon's Shearwater or Tropical Shearwater but is currently understood to be more closely related to the trio of Townsend's Shearwater, Newell's Shearwater, and Rapa Shearwater.

Habitat

Breeds on cliffs and slopes of islands and rocky islets. Otherwise found on or over the ocean.

Behaviour

Essentially unknown for the species. It is expected to be similar to other members of the genus Puffinus.
