Identification
42 cm (16½ in)
- Rufous crown and nape
- Turquoise-bordered black eye mask
- Green upperparts
Distribution
South America: found from the lowlands of eastern Brazil to eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina
Taxonomy
Some authorities have this as a monotypic species[1] species, while others recognize the subspecies ruficapillus and berlai.
Rufous-capped Motmot was at one time considered a form of Rufous Motmot.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and gallery forests, along water courses and on mountain slopes, tropical savanna occurs up to 1200 m.
Behaviour
Observed in a lek containing 5 motmots.
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of large insects, larvae, spiders, land molluscs; small reptiles, birds and mammals. They also eat some fruit.
