[b]Manufacturer -Distributor Review[/b] As with my first Olivon review for the T55, the T90ed scope deserves a 9 out of 10. Aside from not having a protection cap for the viewing end of the eyepiece, the scope offers excellent visuals through its optics. I didn`t get a chance in testing out the tripod that comes with one of the packages on their web store, so this mini-review is solely for the scope itself.
You can already tell that this is a pretty expensive piece of equipment here. Then again, *expensive* is relative to what you are willing to pay versus what you think is the `actual` worth of the thing you want to buy. At $845, this was within my budget, along with the T55. I don`t expect to be lugging around with the T90ed, but in those situations such as going out to Cat`s Lake for a round of camping, I wouldn`t mind. So long as we`re staying put. It`s not a heavy piece, but it isn`t convenient.
With the soft carry bag, I can carry it around, but I wouldn`t want to risk opening the zippers for a quick fix view for my surroundings. There isn`t anything in the bag to hold the scope into place. I always feared it would slip out somehow, and it almost did a few times! The fine people at Olivon should look into this.
Back on topic, the T90ed has multi-coated green extra-low dispersion lenses which actually makes this lighter than the t80 - the lower end model which uses regular optics. I was surprised as the t90ed is a bigger scope by approximately 2 inches! The entire scope is black - rubber armour and aluminum body casing. There is a ring attached to the shoe, near the middle of the scope, that wraps around the tube. It doesn`t come off, but there is a loosening knob that allows the ring to rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise. I am guessing that is for different configurations of tripod/head mounts. I don`t find a use for it personally.
Like the t55, the focuser knob is conveniently placed, and is tight enough for a smooth focus. I also went ahead to see if the scope is really waterproof - or my money back right? So just now, I went downstairs to the kitchen and did the unthinkable for any newbie! I put the t90ed under the tap and turned on the water. I clinched my teeth and hope to Buddha that nothing bad happens to this $845 scope! About 4 minutes of constant pouring, I finally turned off the tap, and took a peek into the eyepiece - no leaks! Yay!
After spending another 10 minutes wiping down the scope (9 of those 10 were spent wiping the lenses), I finally confirm that the t90ed is indeed ocean-resistant - at the very least, waterproof against rain and light snow. So don`t fret if you happen to drop your precious t90ed into the pool, so long as its sand-free, your baby is a-okay!
For the scope itself, I give it a 9 out of 10, and I give the bag a 6 out of 10. For the bag, 1 point off for minor protection (can`t expect much I guess), 3 points off for the scope not being able to be safely held into place while trying to use it while in the bag. Then again, this review is for the scope... [wink]
