25cm (9¾ in)

  • Green overall plumage
  • Dark brownish-black cap
  • Whitish scaly neck and breast
  • Red upper wing coverts
  • Dark breast feathers with light tips
  • Black beak

Juvenile: duller; green primary coverts and carpal edges. White cere and bare white eye ring.

South America: found from Peru to Bolivia and possibly the western edge of Brazil.

[edit] Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • P. r. rupicola - central Peru.
  • P. r. sandiae - SE Peru and N Bolivia.

Humid lowland terra ferme and seasonally flooded forests and forest edges, less often in east Andean foothills up to 300m.

They have been observed feeding on fruits of cecropia trees, but there is little other information available.
