Identification
19–22 cm (7½-8¾ in)
- Blackish head with white streaks
- White spot in front of eye and another at base of forehead
- Whitish chin and whiskers
- Dark brown upperparts
Distribution
South America: found on the eastern slope of the Andes in central Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and north-western Bolivia.
Taxonomy
- M. f. substriata - east slope of Eastern Andes of Colombia (southwestern Meta to southeastern Cauca
- M. f. huilae - head of Magdalena Valley, south central Colombia (Huila)
- M. f. fulvogularis - east slope of Andes from Ecuador and Peru south to Bolivia (to western Santa Cruz)
Habitat
They inhabit the understorey of humid montane forests, at heights around 1400 m asl.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of large invertebrates.
