Identification
21.5 - 23cm.
- Dark brown crown and upperparts
- Rufous tinged uppertail-coverts
- Dark brown upperwing and tail
- Brownish-white below
- Brown or dark brown mottled throat and upper breast, forming a band in some birds
- Dark brown eye
- Horn-brown bill
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Endemic to two small areas at upper River Fly and River Noord in west-central and east-central New Guinea.
Locally common in its tiny known range.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
This species was formerly placed in the genus Pitohui.
Some authorities also place it in genus Pseudorectes.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests, swamps, flat subcoastal plains.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects and fruits. Usually seen in dense vegetation and vine tangles. Joins mixed-species flocks.
Male in breeding condition recorded in August. No other information about breeding.
