40-46cm

  • Dark back with reddish brown bars
  • Barred, greyish white belly
  • Whitish face
  • Greyish-white underparts barred rufous buff
  • Brown eyes
  • Yellow beak and feet
  • Very noticeable outward facing ear tufts.

Distribution

Southeast Asia: found in Indochina, Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Brunei, Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sundas, Bali

Taxonomy

There are 2 subspecies

  • B. s. sumatranus:
  • B. s. strepitans:

An additional subspecies, tenuifasciatus, is not recognised by all authorities[2]

Habitat

Tropical rainforests and plantations.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes grasshoppers, beetles, small rodents, birds, and snakes.

Breeding

They nest in a tree cavity. A single egg is laid.

Vocalisation

The call is a low-pitched hoo.
