21 cm (8¼ in)
Golden-yellow underside, dark bluish-grey upperside, black head with red eye, dark bill and legs.

South America: found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies^[1]:

• B. m. gigas:

• Eastern Andes of Colombia and western Venezuela

• B. m.cucullata:

• Western and Central Andes of Colombia and Ecuador

• B. m. cyanonota:

• Andes of Peru (Amazonas to Junín)

• B. m. saturata:

• Andes of south-eastern Peru (Cuzco and Puno)

• B. m. montana:

• Andes of western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)

A 6th subspecies B. m venezuelana is recognised by some authorities^[2]

Habitat

Montane Cloudforest, edges, ravines with scrub, etc.

Behaviour

Diet

In pairs or flocks, both single and mixed species. Feeds on a variety of foods: insects, seeds, berries, and fruit, found often in or near canopy, but also elsewhere.

Vocalisation

Known to be a vocal species.
