There are 5 subspecies:
- D. h. cagayanensis:
- Northern Philippines (Sierra Madre Mountains of nort-eastern Luzon)
- D. h. obscurum:
- Northern Philippines (central and southern Luzon and Catanduanes)
- D. h. pontifex:
- Philippines (Bohol, Samar, Leyte, Dinagat, Panaon, Mindanao)
- D. h. mindanense:
- Southern Philippines (Zamboanga Peninsula of Mindanao)
- D. h. hypoleucum:
- Southern Philippines (Basilan, Bongao, Jolo, Tawitawi and Siasi)
Habitat
Forest, edge and scrub, below 1500 m.
