Identification

13–14 cm (5-5½ in)

  • Black upper lores and upper supercilium
  • White lower lores and supercilium
  • Grey chin
  • Black ear-coverts
  • Black throat sides

Distribution

Central America: found in the Pacific lowlands of south-western Costa Rica and extreme western Panama.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.

Was formerly placed in genus Thryothorus like all other species of the genus Cantorchilus.

Habitat

Tropical seaside jungle. Dense vegetation, especially riverine. Marshy woodland edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of insects such as beetles, spiders, earwigs and cockroach eggs.
