Many species are found in Europe and Asia, some in North America and one genus also in South America. The Hawaiian honeycreepers are endemic to Hawaii.

The taxonomy of this family has been disputed over a long time. The Hawaiian honeycreepers which are included here have been placed in their own family Drepanididae by some authors. Also the genus Euphonia was included with the tanagers.
