Family: Thraupidae
Description
The tanagers: Small, colorful birds restricted to the New World and mainly to the tropics.
Taxonomy
Thraupidae is a family in order Passeriformes.
This family is in a state of flux; some experts now consider that the tanagers that migrate to North America in the summer belong in family Cardinalidae and the genera Habia, Piranga and Chlorothraupis have been moved to the Cardinals recently.
On the other side around 40 genera of the family Emberizidae are now placed here and three genera (Saltator, Saltatricula and Parkerthraustes) of the family Cardinalidae.
The genus Chlorospingus has recently been moved to the Emberizidae.
