  • Silver-grey back
  • Black wings and tail
  • Pale wing coverts
  • Long spiny crest
  • Black crown
  • White cheeks and ear-coverts
  • Black face, throat, mid breast and centre of belly
  • Orange-buff belly and flanks

Female paler

  • Brown tinged upperparts
  • Shorter brown crest
  • Grey face
  • Dull cinnamon buff eyebrow and underparts.

Distribution

South America: found in the campos of north-eastern Bolivia to north-eastern and central Brazil and north-eastern Argentina.

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Scrubby lowlands and savanna to 1,200m.
