Identification

9·5–10 cm

• Black maxilla
• Black-tipped red mandible
• Blue head and throat

Distribution

North-west South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Three subspecies are recognized^[1]:

• C. o. oenone:

• Eastern Colombia to eastern Venezuela, eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru and western Brazil

• C. o. josephinae:

• Tropical eastern Amazonian Peru

• C. o. alleni:

• Northern Bolivia

Habitat

Humid lowland and montane forests, clearings and edges; also in the gallery of old second growth forests. Observed at heights around 860 m,.

Takes the nectar from flowering trees and shrubs.
