Identification

13–14 cm (5-5½ in)
Male

  • Chestnut head
  • White postocular tuft

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • C. c. chocoensis:
  • Colombia (western slope of west Andes and Baudó Mountains in western Chocó)
  • C. c. castaneiceps:
  • Central and East Andes of Colombia to central Ecuador
  • C. c. chapmani:
  • Eastern slope of Andes of southern Ecuador to northern Peru (San Martín)
  • C. c. brunneinucha:
  • Eastern slope of Andes of central Peru (Huánuco to Cusco)

Habitat

Interiors of tall mossy rainforests, both tropical and subtropical.

Behaviour

Diet

They forage on or near the ground looking for arthropods.
