Identification

25-30cm

  • Slatey-grey back and upperwings (browner in worn plumage)
  • Black M pattern on wings
  • White underparts and underwings
  • White face
  • Dark mask
  • Grey tail
    • Central feathers white edged and black-tipped
  • Black bill
  • Blue-grey legs and feet

Distribution

Breeds islands off New Zealand; ranges to eastern and northern Pacific.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Subspecies orientalis is generally considered invalid[2].

Habitat

Pelagic.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes crustaceans, squid and fish.

Breeding

It nests in crevices and burrows.
