Identification

90–115 cm (35½-45¼ in)

  • White
  • Primaries are black tipped (only visible in flight)
  • Red bill
  • Red legs and feet
  • Sexes similar
  • Juvenile - patchy brown and grey

Distribution

Southern Chile, central Argentina, Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. Migrates in winter north to central Chile, northern Argentina, Uruguay and the south east Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Swamps and lagoons.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes fish, waterplants, mussels, crustaceans and grass.

Breeding

Only the female incubates the 4-7 eggs for 36 days.

Vocalisation

A cos-cor-ooo sound.
