Identification

Length 17cm (6-3/4") A large bird of typical finch morph
Male

  • Grey upperparts and head
  • Small white crescents above and below eyes
  • White throat
  • Grey breast band and flanks

  • White belly in inverted V shape
  • Cinnamon crissum
  • Large blue grey bill with curved culmen

Distribution

South America: found in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Argentina.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Four subspecies are recognized:[1]:

  • D. d. crassirostris:
  • D. d. diuca:
  • Andes of central Chile and central Argentina
  • D. d. chiloensis:
  • Chiloé Island (off western Chile)
  • D. d. minor:
  • Argentina (Córdoba to Santa Cruz); winters to south-eastern Brazil

Dry and high-altitude shrubland, farmland, forest edges and urban gardens.

Behaviour

Breeding

Nests in shrubs with dense leaf cover but no thorns.

Vocalisation

Song: long, loud song with single chirps similar to whit or chit.
