Bubo coromandus


48–53 cm (19-21 in)

  • Greyish overall plumage
  • Round-tipped ear tufts
  • Pale facial disc


Asia: found in Nepal, Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bangladesh and China.
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Malay Peninsula

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • B. c. coromandus:
  • Pakistan to northern and central India, southern Nepal, Assam and Bangladesh disjunct population in southeastern China (Jiangxi and Zhejiang) perhaps also this subspecies
  • B. c. klossii:


Open woodland usually near water, oil palm plantations, mango and tamarind trees.




It builds a nest from sticks, placed in a tree near water.
