Identification
23-28 cm. Small very dumpy sparrowhawk
- upper parts steel grey
- chest peachy orange/vinous becoming paler on belly
- belly to undertail coverts white or whitish
- thighs white
- feet, legs chrome yellow
- eye and eye ring chrome yellow (eye may be orangy)
- cere dull yellowish, not prominent
- bill dark
- upper wings dark
- under wings largely white but with black primaries (wing tips to as far as coverts on outer most primaries). Black trailing edge to wing. Sparse spotting/horizontal bars from inner primaries across other flight feathers
- under tail may appear pale with dark bands or more uniformly greyish (depending on lighting)
- upper tail dark with scarcely visible darker bands
Distribution
Sulawesi endemic. South East Asia: Indonesia: Greater Sundas. In montane forests.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and moist montanes.
