Identification

16 cm (6¼ in)
Male

  • Red cap
  • Thin black band round base of bill
  • Greenish-blue upperparts
  • Red throat
  • Blue collar and moustache

Distribution

South America: found in Peru and Bolivia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • E. v. steerii:
  • Andes of northern Peru (Amazonas to northern Huánuco)
  • E. v. glaucogularis:
  • Andes of central Peru (eastern Huánuco to northern Cusco)
  • E. v. versicolor:
  • Andes of southern Peru (Cusco and Puno) to north-central Bolivia (Cochabamba)

HBW alive recognizes each subspecies as full species: Blue-cowled Barbet (Eubucco steerii), Blue-chinned Barbet (Eubucco glaucogularis) and Blue-moustached Barbet (Eubucco versicolor).

Habitat

Sub-montane humid forests, disturbed secondary rain forest 1,219 m and along roadsides.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of a variety of fruits and seeds, with the addition of some insects such as beetles.
