Identification

17 cm

  • Yellow head, uppertail-coverts, rump and underparts
  • Dark ear-coverts
  • Streaked mantle, back and scapulars

Female is duller; yellow areas being paler and more buffy (particularly crown and nape)

Distribution

Asia: found in India and Nepal.

  • P. m. salimalii:
  • Foothills of north-eastern India

Habitat

Marshes and grassland.

Behaviour

Breeding

It builds its nest in trees, reedbeds, or large areas of tall grass.
