Identification

Yellow bill, pale yellow to bright orange shield (not separated by red), white undertail coverts and broad white tips to the secondaries which are visible in flight.

Similar Species

Red-gartered Coot has white on leading edge of wing, not on secondaries.

Distribution

Extreme southeastern Brazil to eastern Bolivia and south through Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego.

Taxonomy

A monotypic species.

Habitat

Swamps and freshwater lakes, freshwater lagoons, ponds and marshes, preferring sandy or grassy shores. Found from sea level to mid elevations.
