Glossopsitta porphyrocephala
Identification
16cm. It has a purple crown, orange ear coverts and forehead, light blue chest and chin. Upper parts are bright green, with a bronze nape and mantle; underparts are green-yellow with a pale blue belly.
The call is a high-pitched slightly metallic tziet, tziet.
Distribution
Semiarid lowlands of southwestern and southeastern Australia, including Kangaroo Island.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.[1]
Habitat
Open woodland, mallee and coastal heath in its eastern area, and forest areas in the west. It has also adapted well to suburbia.
Behaviour
Feed primarily on nectar and pollen of flowering Eucalypts. May raid orchards at times to feed on ripe fruit. Breed where there is a good supply of nectar and tree hollows.
