Identification

Distribution

Western Africa: found from Angola to Namibia.

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Ammomanes.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized1:

  • A. g. hoeschi:
  • Sandy deserts of extreme south-western Angola to northern Namibia (Cape Cross)
  • A. g. grayi:
  • Western Namibia (Cape Cross to southern edge of Namib Desert)

Habitat

Deserts, gravelly plains and salt flats.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consist mostly of seeds and insects.
