Identification

10–11 cm
Breeding male

  • Blue or green gloss to black plumage
  • White flank spot (usually concealed)
  • Black tail

Distribution

Western and Eastern Africa: found locally in Zambia, south-western Tanzania, Malawi and Zimbabwe

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

This taxon is considered a subspecies of Variable Indigobird by some authors[2]

Subspecies lusituensis is not generally recognised[2].

Habitat

Dense woodland thickets.

Behaviour

Diet

Ground feeders; their main diet consists of small seeds.
