Lophophanes dichrous


11·5–12·5 cm (4½-5 in)

  • Grey upper parts
  • Buffish under parts
  • Long erect crest


Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas and Bhutan
Southeast Asia: occurs only in Indochina and Myanmar

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • L. d. kangrae:
  • Coniferous forests of Kashmir to northern India (Uttar Pradesh)
  • L. d. dichrous :
  • Coniferous forests of western Nepal to Arunachal Pradesh and southern Tibet
  • L. d. dichroides:
  • North-eastern Tibet to south-western China (northern Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and Shaanxi)
  • L. d. wellsi:
  • North-eastern Myanmar and southern China (western Sichuan and north-western Yunnan)


Forests, mountain Valleys. Observed at heights around 8000 feet.



Their diet consists mostly of insects, larvae and invertebrates. Seen feeding with Dark-breasted Rosefinch on cooked egg shells.
