Identification

21–22 cm (8¼-8¾ in)
Male

  • Slaty-grey crown and upperparts
  • Darker grey head sides

Distribution

Southeast Asia: found in Indonesia, Moluccas, Misool, Salawati Islands, Papua New Guinea, D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago, Melanesia

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in the genus Coracina.

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • E. s. schisticeps:
  • Misool Island and Salawati Island and north-western New Guinea
  • E. s. reichenowi:
  • Northern New Guinea (Geelvink Bay to Sepik flood-plain)
  • E. s. poliopsa:
  • Southern New Guinea (Kapare River to Astrolabe Mountains)
  • E. s. vittatum:
  • D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Fergusson and Goodenough)

Habitat

Forests and forest edges, including tall secondary growth; from sea level to 1500 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of fruit with the addition of insects, caterpillars.
