Alternative name: Maes's Laughingthrush

Identification
28 - 30.5cm. A fairly large laughingthrush:
- Plain grey plumage
- Black face (lores , area around the eye, chin), throat and upper breast greyish-brown
- Nominate with pale grey ear-coverts and white nape side
- Dark grey tail
Sexes similar, juveniles more brownish.
Distribution
Found in south China (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong).
Locally common in its range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly considered conspecific with Rufous-cheeked Laughingthrush.
Grahami from south-western China, accepted by Clements[1] is no longer accepted by other authorities[2]
This species would remain in the genus Garrulax in a rearrangement of the genus.
Habitat
Broadleaf evergreen forest, found at 400 - 1700m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on insects.
Usually seen in groups of ten or more birds, often together with other species in bird waves. Forages on the ground in leaf litter but also ascends to middle storey.
Breeding
Breeding season April to May in China. No other information.
Movements
Resident species.
