Western Africa: eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Africa: south-western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in genus Francolinus.
Two subspecies, chapini and ruandae are generally considered invalid.
Occurs from lower montane forest, through areas of bamboo to alpine heath.
The diet consists mainly of seeds.
