Pternistis nobilis


33–35 cm (13-13¾ in)

  • Dark red brown plumage
  • Grey head
  • Red bill and legs
  • Brown iris
  • Bare red orbital skin
  • Rufous grey underparts

Sexes are similar (female is a little smaller than male)
Young birds have duller plumage


Western Africa: eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Africa: south-western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi


This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly placed in genus Francolinus.

Two subspecies, chapini and ruandae are generally considered invalid[2].


Occurs from lower montane forest, through areas of bamboo to alpine heath.


The diet consists mainly of seeds.
